Repairing Sharp TV Universe Instant Protection (Green LED to Red)
Some cases that are often encountered when doing service on Sharp TV Universe involve Sharp TV Universe protection mode. In this case, the TV turns on for just a moment with a snapping/popping sound before shutting down to standby.
Initial Inspection & Component Checks
1. Flyback Anode Cap Replacement
After disassembling the TV, the initial physical check revealed that the flyback rubber cap was severely damaged/corroded. After replacing the cap, a trial run was conducted. Thought it was an easy fix, but the TV only turned on for a few seconds before the LED indicator changed from green back to red.
2. PCB Cleaning & Re-soldering
The hunt for the protection trigger began by thoroughly checking all physical components. The board was quite dusty, so it was cleaned and re-soldered across key sections. However, testing again showed the same symptom—instant protection.

3. Disabling Protection (J223) & Measuring Voltages
After taking a short coffee break to get a clear perspective, I disabled the protection circuit by lifting jumper J223. Voltage measurements showed everything was normal except for the 180V RGB line, which suffered a heavy voltage drop.
4. Testing the 180V Line Capacitor with ESR Meter
Testing the filter capacitor on the 180V line (10uF / 250V) using an ESR meter revealed that its value had completely degraded—the needle on the meter didn't move at all, indicating a dried-out electrolytic capacitor.
Solution & Testing Result
Replacing the 10uF / 250V capacitor on the 180V line completely cured the protection mode. Testing the TV for over 1 hour confirmed it stayed stable without turning back to standby mode.
